Australia or New Zealand? Or both? That’s a question we get asked a lot. They’re familiar, yet different. Huge, and expensive. So planning your trip is important because unless you have unlimited time and money, it’s best to cherry pick.
Both of these countries are very easy for Baby Boomers and Seniors to visit. The people are friendly, the climate is mild, you can drink the water. Public transportation is not fabulous; you’ll be driving or taking tours a lot. If you’re comfortable visiting California, you’ll be comfortable visiting Australia or New Zealand.
Australia is about the size of the mainland US, but with much less variety in terms of people and topography. So focus on the places and activities you’d like to see.
Relative to other countries, Australia is VERY expensive, so it’s best to plan the things you really want to see.
Here are our recommendations for the essential Australia visit:
- Great Barrier reef
- Sydney
- Melbourne
- Uluru/Ayers Rock and Alice Springs are optional from our point of view
