Celebrating July 4th Abroad
One could argue our current political situation has cast a shadow over this July 4th. Countries in every corner of the globe are re-examining and re-evaluating alliances, and contemplating their positions in this new world order.
So, what does this mean to travelers who find themselves abroad on this American holiday? Wave the Stars and Stripes, or keep it under wraps? We say – wave it proud!
Derek and I have had the good fortune to be in some exquisite destinations on past Independence Days.
For example, one year we were aboard a Turkish gulet (small sailing ship) cruise with 16 others from Europe and Australia. At dinner, Derek most graciously bought beers for all, and our fellow passengers joined us in singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and other patriotic favorites, not to mention belting out The Star Spangled Banner across the peaceful Aegean Sea.
Another year, we were in South Africa’s Kruger Park. We spent a good part of the evening singing patriotic songs, having been delayed by a herd of elephants from leaving the Park, and settling for the last chalet available at a rustic camp in the wilderness. Our travel companions happily joined in the serenade.
Another time, we strolled hand in hand on the Champs Elysee to the American Embassy free for all July 4th party in Paris, surrounded by French bonhomie.
We’ve always chosen to be mini-ambassadors of goodwill. Folks in foreign countries may disagree with what’s going on in DC now, but they realize as individuals, we Americans want the best for our planet, and will again be a positive actor on the world stage. They are willing to put people over politics. So, if you find yourself overseas on this July 4th, celebrate the birth of an amazing country, salute our Founding Fathers and share the good vibes with everyone you meet. Happy 4th!!
