This Hartmann Spinner is Derek’s toughest suitcase ever.
Why the Hartmann Herringbone Expandable Spinner is worth it.

As you may have gathered, Elaine and I travel a lot, sometimes to funky places where our baggage gets hammered on the way. For one thing, we are always over stuffing it so we can avoid checking bags. There’s no worse feeling than showing up late at night in, say, Uzbekistan, only to find that your bag didn’t make it with you. So whenever we can, we’re looking for carry-on roll-aboard suitcases that are easy to wheel through airports, strong enough to deal with being dragged onto buses, thrown into overhead bins and so on. The Hartmann Herringbone Expandable Spinner fit the bill for me. Here are some the benefits of my suitcase.
Best Roller I Could Find
I’ve been very happy with TravelPro suitcases in the past, but I got a rotator cuff injury, which my physical therapist thought may have been caused by snagging my two wheel rollabord on something behind me while I ran through an airport. So I needed to switch to a smooth rolling “Spinner” (i.e. 4 wheel suitcase) so that I could push it in front of me or beside me rather than dragging it behind. That meant I was looking for a suitcase that had a very strong undercarriage and ran very smoothly on a lot of surfaces. So I decided to upgrade to the more expensive Hartmann Expandable Spinner after test driving various suitcases.
Hartmann’s 10 Year Warranty is pretty unusual
Hartmann are in the quality business (and most of the prices reflect it). For example, they have a 10-year warranty on their suitcases:
10 Year Limited Warranty – Travel, Bag, or Business Products
For ten years after a Hartmann Travel, Bag, or Business Product is purchased from an authorized Hartmann store or retailer, it is covered by the 10 Year Limited Warranty. (Read more at their site).
Now personally, I don’t believe in paying hundred of dollars for a suitcase, but I was able to get a really good deal from Amazon. So, for under $200, I have a top of the line suitcase that rolls, well, like a Rolls. It’s four years and counting and it looks like new. The zips are really strong and don’t show signs of parting even with the overstuff challenges I have thrown at them.
It’s The Right Size
At first, I didn’t like the fact that the Hartmann Herringbone Expandable Spinner unzips into equal large compartments, but it turns out that really works well for because I can roll all my shirts and pants into one side, and everything else into the other. And the Expandable part is true: it expands with a secondary zipper and also an outside compartment.
You Can Feel The Quality
The suitcase is made of heavy canvas and weighs in a little heavier than my old TravelPro, but the resilience and the great four wheel undercart make that a non-issue.
